You know the saying “If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it”? The Sony MDR-V6 has been out since the 80’s and although technology has advanced immensely, these headphones are still the same ol’ wildly popular headphones that they use to be.

Can a pair of headphones that are over 30 years old still hold up to today’s standards? There is a reason why Sony hasn’t taken the MDR-V6 off their shelves. For a price less than $100, you get flat, crystal-clear sound quality that any sound engineer, producer, or audiophile can appreciate.

The MDR-V6 is one of my favorite budget headphones for many reasons. It sounds great and is ultra-affordable.

In this review, we’ll take a closer look at the Sony MDR-V6. Hopefully by the end of this article you’ll have a more clear idea on if the V6 is for you.

What’s Included?

With the V6 you get a 1/4 inch adapter and a soft pouch.

The adapter included is gold-plated. It’s nice that Sony included an adapter. A lot of DJs love the MDR-V6 and need a way to connect it to their mixer. The adapter allows them to do just that without having to buy any extra accessories.

It’s always good to have a safe place to store your headphones. The soft pouch not only provides protection for your headphones, but it also makes for great storage when you’re traveling.

How Does The MDR-V6 Sound?

The MDR-V6 provides an accurate sound across the entire audio spectrum. You can hear small details in songs that you couldn’t hear before.

The bass frequencies are very clear. There is a very smooth balance between the low and mid frequencies. The highs are especially nice. You’ll get a crisp and detailed high-end without any distortion.

You won’t need any sort of headphone amp to make the V6 sound good. Even if these headphones are just plugged into an iPod, you’ll still get a powerful sound. It doesn’t take much to drive the V6.

The V6 has a VERY wide frequency response. It will produce sound from 5Hz to 30,000kHz. This gives you plenty of low end and full high-end, farther than the human ear can hear.

The noise cancelation is also quite good. Once you put these headphones on you can barely register any outside noise. You can still hear a bit of outside low-end frequencies(if they’re loud enough), but most external treble frequencies are cut out.

The Comfort Level

The MDR-V6 are a pair of headphones that will remain comfortable after long studio sessions. The soft pads do a great job at cushioning your ears.

There is an adjustable headphone-band that allows the V6 to fit any head size; big or small. The ear cups are large enough to conform over your ears comfortabally.

The V6 does not squeeze your head too tightly, but they’ll stay on securely without falling off. It grips your head just enough to provide for good noise cancelation and no sound-leakage.

The Build Quality

My favorite part about the MDR-V6’s design is how Compact it can be. It has a folding design that works out great for traveling.

The design is simple and minimalistic. In no way is this a bad thing. The V6 is designed ruggedly to last you for many years.

Unfortunately the headphone cord is not detachable. If I had to make one change to the MDR-V6, without a doubt it would be to make the headphone cord detachable. Thankfully the cord they use is tough enough to last you for years.

The headphone cord is also extremely long! It measures in at 10 feet. Don’t let that intimidate you! The cord is coiled so it won’t get in the way.

Another feature I loved was that all of the connectors were gold-plated. Both the adapter and the 3.5mm headphone cord are gold-plated.

What Others Think About The MDR-V6

99% of the reviews I read talked about how great the sound quality was. These headphones give you a nice and clear sound without having to spend a whole lot.

The bass is very flat and tight. Some people complained about this because they enjoy bass-boosted headphones. If you are doing any sort of studio work, you’ll want a flat sound because it will be an accurate representation of a mix.

It’s worth noting that you’ll have a better listening experience if you listen to higher-quality music. These headphones do a great job at pointing out all of the errors in a song. If you buy your songs through iTunes, or any other trusted source of music, the sound quality should be fine.

Everyone loved the affordability of these cans. For less than $100 you get long lasting headphones that has amazing sound quality. There are many places to buy the MDR-V6.

It was clear that these headphones have a very high build quality. There was one person who has been using the MDR-V6 for 15 years without any issues. I even saw another person who has been using them for 20 years.

To summarize, if you are looking for a high quality pair of cans that won’t break bank, look no further than the Sony MDR-V6. It’s superb sound along with it’s comfortable design makes for an excellent listening experience.

To this day I haven’t found any headphones, for less than $100, that can compete with the V6. I found it amazing that a piece of technology can live for more than 30 years and not go obsolete.

You don’t have to throw down a ton of money to get a good pair of headphones. Especially if you’re a beginner, your spending budget is going to be tight. The Sony MDR-V6 supplies a whole lot of bang for your buck.
